Bless Romo (she/her) joined the Canopy team in March 2024 as Communications and Marketing Coordinator. We asked Bless a few questions to get to know her better.
Bless: I grew up in Modesto and Watsonville, CA with five sisters and a couple of cats. I received my B.S. and M.S. in Earth Systems from Stanford University in the Fall of 2023. During college, I developed an interest in environmental storytelling and community resilience. Before working with Canopy, I was a Climate Justice in the Bay Area Fellow with North Fair Oaks Community Alliance and a Small-Scale Fisheries Fellow with the Environmental Defense Fund.
Bless: Everybody has a story about trees or their local environment, and I’m excited to help share these stories through community building and creative environmental storytelling. I’m particularly excited to share stories about the community members that contribute to and have been impacted by the success of Canopy’s urban forestry efforts, such as the Teen Urban Foresters. I am also excited to learn more about tree care and urban forestry practices at Canopy events!
Bless: I’m originally from Modesto and spent my teenage years in Watsonville. Coming from two communities that experienced inequitable and insufficient tree coverage, I’ve always appreciated the presence of trees. On hot summer days in the Central Valley, I appreciated the cooling presence of an oak tree. On misty mornings in the Central Coast, I appreciated the smell of fragrant tree leaves. As I’ve gotten older, I’ve learned about the importance of trees for community resilience, public health, and ecology. With Canopy, I’m discovering the importance of trees as a tool for building community.
Bless: Coast redwood or sugar pine trees! Sugar pinecones are huge!
Bless: “I got gloves for my glove action figure!” – Patrick Star
Bless: I love to dance! I started dancing when I was 5 years old and have trained in hip hop, tap, and contemporary dance. I also crochet, and I’m hoping we can start a Canopy crochet club one day.
Thanks, Bless! Welcome to the Canopy team. 🌳
