As we enter Black History Month, we want to acknowledge and celebrate the countless contributions and advancements Black Americans have made to environmental advocacy and conservation. Recognizing the obstacles faced by Black individuals in the environmental field is an essential step toward fostering inclusivity and breaking down systemic barriers.
Efforts to close the green gap and create equitable green spaces are crucial for addressing health disparities and promoting environmental justice. Tree planting initiatives, in particular, can have a significant impact not only on the environment but also on the well-being of communities. Trees contribute to improved air quality, provide shade, reduce the urban heat island effect, and enhance overall environmental resilience. By actively dismantling barriers and promoting diversity, equity, and inclusion, we can create a more sustainable and just future for all.
Education is a main pillar of Canopy’s mission. So this Black History Month, we encourage you to learn more about the systemic injustices that have kept Black communities from the benefits and beauty of our natural world. And then, be part of the solution: help plant a tree in a historically redlined neighborhood, support local Black-owned businesses, or participate in the various events happening this month.

Al entrar en el Mes de la Historia Afroamericana, queremos reconocer y celebrar las innumerables contribuciones y avances que han hecho a la defensa y conservación del medio ambiente. Reconocer los obstáculos que enfrentan las personas negras en el campo ambiental es un paso esencial para fomentar la inclusión y derribar barreras sistémicas.
Los esfuerzos para cerrar la brecha verde y crear espacios verdes equitativos son cruciales para abordar las disparidades en salud y promover la justicia ambiental. Las iniciativas de plantación de árboles, en particular, pueden tener un impacto significativo no sólo en el medio ambiente sino también en el bienestar de las comunidades. Los árboles contribuyen a mejorar la calidad del aire, proporcionan sombra, reducen el efecto de isla de calor urbana y mejoran la resiliencia ambiental general. Por eso, en este Mes de la Historia Afroamericana, lo alentamos a aprender más sobre las injusticias sistémicas que han impedido a las comunidades negras los beneficios y la belleza de nuestro mundo natural.
