Optimism isn’t about ignoring reality; it’s about choosing light over darkness, solutions over inaction. We will meet the moment with the conviction that change is always possible. That a single tree, planted in love and care, can transform a landscape and a generation. That a single act, carried out in hope, can spark a movement

Because hope isn’t naive — it is an active response to crisis. Movements for change have always been fueled by deeply rooted dreams of a brighter future. This is the work before us — not just to plant trees, but to plant the future we dream of. Not just to grow our urban forest, but to restore faith in what we can achieve when we come together to form a beautiful symphony of community.

Our path is clear. Where there is doubt, we will plant trust. Where there is division, we will plant unity. Where there is despair, we will plant hope.

At the @allfiveschool campus in Belle Haven, trees

At the @allfiveschool campus in Belle Haven, trees and children are growing taller together.

Funded in part by a @calfire Green Schoolyards Grant, Canopy and All Five are planting trees at the early childhood school and teaching a series of interactive classroom lessons about the benefits of trees. The new lessons represent the expansion of Canopy’s lessons into pre-kindergarten, kindergarten, and 1st grade classrooms and are designed to inspire the students to notice, appreciate and love trees and nature as they are developing their core values. These engaging lessons incorporate a variety of interactive elements, including scavenger hunts, arts and crafts, and the popular puppet pal “Señora Arbol”.

In addition to planting seeds of excitement and curiosity in the students, the Green Schoolyards Grant will plant an additional 32 trees on All Five’s campus by 2026, providing the students with more shade to play under and more opportunities to experience the benefits of trees.

That’s what Canopy’s education programs are about: connecting all students, young and old alike, with the trees around them and helping them develop an appreciation for their local urban forest and environment.

Our board co-chair and East Palo Alto native Uriel Hernandez said it best during our ceremony last week celebrating East Palo Alto’s milestone designation as a Tree City USA:

This isn’t just a designation, it’s a testament to the deep-rooted care, commitment, and vision that this community has nurtured for decades.

We’ve seen that commitment in action, in the partnership with Canopy that planted over 1,000 trees along the Highway 101 sound wall, turning a corridor of pollution, noise, and division into a green ribbon of protection and hope. And we’ve seen it in every tree planted since then.

We’ve seen it in the City’s adoption of our Urban Forest Master Plan, a bold and thoughtful guide toward a more sustainable and equitable future, showing our community’s commitment towards a greener tomorrow.

And we’ve seen it in the countless volunteers (neighbors, youth, elders) who have planted and cared for thousands of trees over the years, one shovel, one bucket, one root at a time. Appreciation and gratitude to all those involved in bringing about this day.

Today, we planted a ginkgo tree. The ginkgo is ancient; one of the oldest living tree species on Earth. It has survived ice ages, extinctions, even atomic bombings. It is, above all else, resilient. Just like East Palo Alto.

Let’s also acknowledge that the city’s environmental landscape wasn’t shaped by neglect, but by systemic environmental injustice and hard choices. By communities that have long faced social inequities, housing instability, and the prioritization of urgent human needs. The historic lack of investment hasn’t been due to a lack of desire, but a reflection of the tough realities we’ve had to navigate.

And still we rose. We planted. We persisted. Because those who love East Palo Alto @cityofepa have always put in the work.

This Tree City USA designation honors that spirit. It honors the strength and beauty of a community that knows its roots, and continues to grow, tall, proud, and together.

🏫🌳On Monday, 50 youth and 15 parents and staff from @kippexcelencia and @connect_rwc celebrated Earth Day with Canopy by planting 7 trees on their shared school campus in North Fair Oaks! Planted along the campus playground and Hampshire Ave, these trees will bring shade and joy to the schools and North Fair Oaks community for generations to come. As the trees grow, they’ll create an inviting canopy for people to come together.

Canopy looks forward to continuing to partner with KIPP Excelencia and Connect Community Charter School, continuing the work of planting trees, bringing people together, and bridging the green gap in NFO. Today is Earth Day, and Canopy’s commitment to the renewable power of land, of community, and of spirit is more important than ever. We know that trees are more than just shade and greenery; they are vital parts of a natural ecosystem that protects our Earth and everyone on it from the effects of the climate crisis by lowering amounts of harmful CO2 gases in the atmosphere and reducing energy use in tree-shaded communities.

Trees are also symbols of justice, of healing, and of the hope that anchors us in times of uncertainty. To plant a tree is to believe in tomorrow. To care for a tree is to care for the generations who will one day stand under its canopy.

In honor of Mountain View’s incoming mayor @mtnv

In honor of Mountain View’s incoming mayor @mtnviewellen Ellen Kamei, we continued a long tradition of planting a tree for each new civic leader — this time, a beautiful Engelmann Oak, symbolizing strength, vision, and a future rooted in service.

And the celebration didn’t stop there. 18 more trees were planted with the help of Canopy volunteers from across the city — people of all ages and backgrounds coming together this weekend to take action and grow something lasting.

Mountain View’s urban forest is a model for many — and it’s no accident. It thrives because of the shared commitment of leaders and neighbors who believe in the power of trees to connect, heal, and transform.
