Canopy and Mountain View Whisman School District Launch Three-Year Greening Partnership to “Plant Hope” on School Campuses

By Canopy Team on August 18, 2025

MOUNTAIN VIEW, CA — In a bold step toward a greener, healthier future for students and families, Canopy, the Mountain View Whisman School District (MVWSD), and Living Classroom have announced a new partnership to plant and care for trees, expand native landscaping, and deepen community connection at local school campuses.

Over the next three years, Canopy will lead a districtwide greening initiative that includes planting at least 150 trees across ten school campuses, with a special focus on enhancing outdoor learning environments. The project will also provide expert tree and native plant care, community education, and family-centered events to inspire long-term stewardship.

“Through this partnership, we’re not just planting trees—we’re planting hope,” said Jean-Paul Renaud, executive director of Canopy. “We’re investing in shade for students, resilience for our neighborhoods, and a living legacy of climate action, rooted right here in Mountain View’s schools.”

The collaboration is part of MVWSD’s broader commitment to outdoor learning and sustainability. Canopy will serve as a key liaison between the district, the City of Mountain View, and partners like Living Classroom, ensuring that tree planting and care efforts are coordinated, strategic, and community driven.

“Our partnerships will continue as we plant more trees at our other school sites. These trees plant seeds in our students — seeds of environmental stewardship, care, and advocacy that grows with them throughout their lives,” said Superintendent Jeffrey Baier. “We are grateful to our partners who bring not just expertise but a powerful mission: bringing community members together to invest in our collective well-being, joy, and resilience in a changing climate.”

Highlights of the initiative include:

  • A minimum of 15 trees planted at each of 10 campuses, in alignment with outdoor classroom design
  • Ongoing care through a full-time certified arborist specializing in native plants;
  • Monthly visits, training, and customized care plans for every school;
  • Hands-on volunteer events and educational activities for students and families;
  • Integration of drought-tolerant, California-native plants into school landscapes.

The first school plantings are expected to begin this fall. Community members will be invited to volunteer and participate in celebration events, including an annual Fall Tree Festival and Earth Day gathering.
