Background

This fall, the City of Palo Alto and Canopy staff surveyed part of the Midtown neighborhood to identify potential tree-planting sites. After considering factors such as size and location, growing area, soil conditions, and presence of utilities and overhead wires, we identified almost 40 street tree sites and numerous private yard tree sites where a new tree could safely thrive. We then categorized each site as “small” or “large” based on overall area and the presence or absence of overhead wires, and for each category we created a short list of species that would be appropriate to plant. We are prioritizing drought tolerant and many native species, especially oaks, to benefit the neighborhood for many years to come.

In mid-September, we mailed a letter to each resident with a planting site near their home, inviting residents to choose their preferred tree species options for the sites they will steward.

Sister Neighborhood Planting

Canopy is proud to serve the diverse communities found in the Mid-Peninsula and actively seeks ways to bring people of all backgrounds together to work towards a common goal: greening neighborhoods.

This tree planting is part of a special Sister Neighborhood Tree Planting between a Palo Alto and East Palo Alto neighborhood. The first tree planting will be October 22nd in University Village in East Palo Alto. The second tree planting will be this one in Midtown in Palo Alto the next weekend, on October 29th. We encourage residents and volunteers to attend both planting days as a joint effort toward growing the tree canopy and new friendships.

Neighborhood Participation

We hope that you mark your calendar for Saturday, October 29th at 9:00am. Canopy planting leaders, City staff, and neighborhood volunteers will join together for a fun, hands-on day of tree planting and socializing with neighbors. All ages are welcome. You don’t want to miss it!

If you are a Midtown resident responding to the City’s letter, we invite you to use the form below.  You can also reach Canopy’s Community Forestry Coordinator, Elise Willis, at 650-964-6110, ext. 9 or elise@canopy.org.

Tree Planting Volunteers

Even if we are not planting a tree adjacent to your home, we invite you to participate in this tree-planting event in October. Please use our VOLUNTEER SIGN-UP FORM or email Uriel Hernandez at uriel@canopy.org. Thank you for your interest!
