  • Tree Care Work Day - Willow Oaks School

    Help maintain young trees and keep our urban forest happy and healthy! Join Canopy as we continue to do some much needed tree care work on young trees. The day will mostly consist of weeding, mulching, and adjusting stakes as needed. All tools and equipment will be provided and snacks will be provided in the morning. We encourage you to bring reusable water bottles. Volunteers must wear closed-toe shoes and sign a waiver (or have your parent/guardian sign a waiver if you are under 18 years old).   • Young Tree Care Survey

    Help care for community trees! Each year Canopy volunteers and partners comb through Palo Alto neighborhoods to survey the health of hundreds of young street trees. The results of the survey help guide the City of Palo Alto Urban Forestry as they maintain and grow Palo Alto’s vibrant urban forest. This is a fun, flexible volunteer opportunity for all ages--and a great way to learn your street trees!

    Session one in Canopy's three-part interactive training (August 16th, 23rd, and 30th).
    Are you passionate about trees, the environment, and education? Do you enjoy working with youth? This three-part interactive training will prepare you to work as an Education volunteer with Canopy, exploring the wonderful world of trees through hands-on science lessons with elementary, middle, and high school students.

    The training will take place on three consecutive Wednesdays:
    Part 1: Wednesday, August 16th, 10:00 am - 12:30pm
    Part 2: Wednesday, August 23rd, 10:00 am - 12:30pm
    Part 3: Wednesday, August 30th, 10:00 am - 12:30pm

    Sessions will cover teaching methodology, cultural sensitivity, and three of Canopy's education modules. Following the training, you’ll have a chance to sign up for volunteer dates throughout the 2017-2018 school year.

    Join Canopy, expert arborist, Ellyn Shea, and an expert bird watcher for an exploration of the trees and birds of College Terrace. We'll discuss tips and tricks for bird watching, while learning about the rare and lovely Purple Birch, the fast-growing Douglas Fir, the classic Coast Live Oak, Western Catalpa, Scarlet Oak, Japanese Flowering Crabapple, and many more.

    Want to volunteer outside, meet neighbors, and make a visible difference in your community? Join our team of planting leaders!

    Part one is a classroom session offered on both Tuesday or Thursday (pick one session). During this session, you'll learn proper tree planting and tree techniques, meet your fellow tree planters, and discuss volunteer engagement strategies.

    Part two is a Saturday field session where you'll gain hands-on practice planting trees in a local school, park, or neighborhood.

    Join Canopy and an expert arborist for a Tree Walk in the Greenmeadow neighborhood. The walk will include a great variety of trees: Sugar Maple, Bigleaf Maple, Cork Oak, Torrey Pine, Brazilian Pepper Tree, Moraine Ash, Soapbark Tree, Tulip Tree, Holly Oak and many others.     A Sunday tree walk! Come stroll with Canopy and expert arborist, Laura Fanger, to explore the trees of one of Palo Alto's most beloved public gardens. We'll encounter species like the Manna Gum, Cucumber Tree, Cockspur Coral Tree, Japanese Persimmon Hachiya, and many more.

    This Tree Walk begins at the Elizabeth F. Gamble Garden parking lot, near the corner of Waverley Street and Embarcadero Road.
