Swipe to see the 16-year transformation of East Palo Alto's Highway 101 sound wall! In 2006, then @cityofepa Mayor Pat Foster approached Canopy about alarming asthma rates among the city's youth. Canopy collaborated with community partners to install nearly 1000 trees in 2007, and in 2023, these trees are thriving as nature's filters —their leaves doing the work so our lungs don’t have to. In honor of Native Indigenous Heritage Month, the

In honor of Native Indigenous Heritage Month, the Teen Urban Foresters (TUFs) watched and discussed clips of the "Braiding Sweetgrass" talk with Indigenous leader, author, and scientist Dr. Robin Wall Kimmerer, hosted and presented by Peninsula Open Space Trust (@postlandtrust) and the Muwekma Ohlone Tribe (@muwekmaohlonetribe). A quote by Dr. Kimmerer was the focus of their discussion:

“Land and people are one... The land is not healthy if the people are not healthy. The people are not healthy without healthy land.” The TUFs were able to share examples they have seen of Canopy’s work healing our relationship with the land.

Our work in understanding and centering Indigenous history and voices at Canopy is an ongoing, imperfect process. We thank you for joining us on this important journey.

This November, please join Canopy in celebrating Native American Heritage Month! We welcome you on our journey of learning, understanding, and honoring Indigenous history, truth, and knowledge.

Canopy honors the Indigenous philosophies that have guided – and continue to guide – the stewardship of our precious ecosystems. We acknowledge the historical and ongoing tribulations that Native communities face locally in the Bay Area and throughout the world. Additionally, we recognize that Canopy resides and works on land that was stolen from multiple Indigenous tribes. We extend our immense gratitude to the Native leaders who have helped us navigate how to thoughtfully center Native voices in Canopy’s work.
