Cesar Chavez Tree Care Work Day

Details: We don't want our young trees to get thirsty! Young trees require extra care in their first few years, especially sufficient water during the dry summers. Join Canopy to care for recently planted trees on the Cesar Chavez school campus, and help ensure that they grow into healthy, mature, shade-giving trees that will provide benefits for decades to come! Downtown North Canopy Tree Walk

Where: Hawthorne Avenue and Kipling Street, Palo Alto

Details: Walk along with Canopy and Ellyn Shea, local arborist and educator, through the streets of Palo Alto on our Downtown North tree walk. Tree Talk: Trees of Yosemite with Ranger Bob

Where: Boy Scout Fire Circle - Lucie Stern Community Center, 1305 Middlefield Rd, Palo Alto

Details: Join Canopy around the campfire for a lively evening with author, park ranger, and master naturalist Bob Roney, also known as “Ranger Bob.” Roney continues his career of nearly five decades at Yosemite National Park, first as a firefighter then as a park ranger, and always as an enthusiastic steward of one of America’s greatest treasures. Ranger Bob will highlight some of the amazing trees of Yosemite and elucidate the human and natural forces that both threaten and shape Yosemite’s forest ecosystem. Following the fire-side presentation, participants are invited to stay for marshmallow-roasting, s’mores, and more tree talk with Canopy friends. RSVP and reserve your spot today.

Planting Leader Training, Part 1 (option 1)

Where: Peninsula Conservation Center - 3921 East Bayshore Road, Palo Alto
Date: September 4, 2014
Time: 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm
Details: This hands-on workshop is geared towards teens and adults who want to help lead community tree-plantings with the City’s nonprofit partner Canopy. No prior planting experience or tree knowledge is required; we welcome all skill levels. Part one (offered Thursday and Friday) includes an introduction to trees, proper tree-planting techniques, and best practices in young tree care. Part two (Saturday) allows participants to put their new skills to work by planting new trees in a Palo Alto or East Palo Alto park or neighborhood. In exchange for this free workshop, trainees are asked to volunteer at two Canopy planting workdays and one tree care workday between October, 2014 and March of 2015. Light snacks will be provided. College Terrace Canopy Tree Walk

Details: Take a stroll with Canopy and an expert arborist to learn about the trees of College Terrace. We'll discuss the rare and lovely Purple Birch, the fast-growing Douglas Fir, the classic Caost Live Oak, Western Catalpa, Scarlet Oak, Japanese Flowering Crabapple, and many more.
